I have been anemic on and off throughout most of my life. I cannot swallow pills. Medication and supplements are even harder to safely source for Celiac than food products are. Gluten labeling in medication is voluntary. The FDA doesn’t require anything for these types of products.
Since I cannot swallow pills, I have to find gummies or chewable tablets without gluten (usually wheat) binders or glucose syrup derived from gluten (usually wheat). Various sites will tell you gluten-based glucose syrup is safe; others say it isn’t. You need to listen to your body.
In addition to Celiac, I have a wheat allergy. They are two very different reactions.
I don’t want anything sourced from gluten in what I put in my body, especially wheat-based.
When I was looking for an Iron gummy that didn’t have lots of extra ingredients (I wasn’t looking for a multi-vitamin), I finally came across Lifeable. After a brief email exchange, they confirmed for me that the glucose syrup they use is derived from corn. They have one for adults and one for kids. They are grape flavored, and the iron is microencapsulated, which helps minimize the flavor. That said, chew fast and swallow to reduce the metallic flavor, but as iron products go, the flavor is bearable.
The product itself has this allergen statement: Does not contain eggs, wheat (gluten), milk, peanuts, tree nuts, soy, or shellfish. Processed in a nut free facility.
The website also shares that these vitamins/supplements are gelatin free and vegetarian, non-gmo, and natural flavor.
They also only have 5g of carbs and the total sugar is 3g (per 2 gummies). This is for the adult serving at least.
